Your Personal Marketing Plan - Part 3 of 5 - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Your Personal Marketing Plan - Part 3 of 5 - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Your Personal Marketing Plan Post Series Segment 1: Situational Analysis A definite portrayal of precisely where you are a major part of your life, just as your main goal, vision and life cycle. Segment 2: Audience Analysis Researching what the market is for your image, with both essential and optional exploration and quantitative and subjective estimations. _____________ Area 3 is centered around your opposition. In the wake of perceiving who your crowd is, their needs and what you can convey, you have to evaluate who else is there to give a comparative or important help. For example, with regards to innovation, you have Robert Scoble, Om Malik and Mike Arrington battling it out over who claims the best portion of the innovation nerd crowd. On the off chance that youre a specialist, attorney or dental specialist, you will be in all likelihood be contending dependent on the spot, notoriety and verbal referrals. In the event that youre a secondary school understudy, you will vie for school situation and if youre in school, you will seek passage level positions. Rivalry is a gathering of individuals who are searching for the precisely same thing you are and are experiencing a comparative procedure to increase a chance and strip you of one (infrequently purposefully). Associations and universities are serious training camps, as they set you up for your n ext circumstance, while the way to section can be heartless. There is a significant contrast between a serious examination organizations use versus people. When playing out a serious investigation for a business, you would analyze the main 5-10 rivals in your specialty and record their item names, costs, separation and highlights. While fighting people, things are very unique. You cannot Google your opposition before a prospective employee meet-up or while you experience the school confirmations process. Its about difficult to know precisely who youre contending with for a vocation or while applying for schools. Before applying to universities, secondary school consultants or vocation focuses will impart to you normal SAT scores, just as the normal GPA and hereditary cosmetics of the past green bean class per every school youre inspired by. Its a method to get ready you and tight down your pursuit. Rather than applying to 20 schools, youre applying to a wellbeing, reach and two or three ones in your ballpark. There is no assurance of acknowledgment, however in the event that you have a 1100 on your SAT and a 3.2 GPA, you presumably wont get into Harvard (except if you purchase a structure or your father is on the top managerial staff). A few organizations have elevated standards for up-and-comers and set some hard boundaries. They may anticipate 3.0 GPAs, however will in general be increasingly centered around the nature of an individual from a best-fit angle. While talking with, you are never uncovered your opposition. Its like a round of Poker, where the business isnt giving you his hand. Individual marking is significant while going after a position since you dont know precisely who youre facing and if youre separated and arranged from the beginning, it wont matter! Rivalry turns out to be progressively substantial when youre blogging. There are several sites that screen and rank websites as indicated by Technorati authority, Google PageRank, endorser check, number of hits every day and client appraisals. At the point when you see writes that are evaluated higher than yours, you may dissect their site to perceive any reason why they are so fruitful and either develop your marking system or take notes on best practices that you can actualize. When youre a business person or working for a business, its far simpler to get a handle on who your opposition is and when you do, you can pull that data and view the similitudes and contrasts among them and your activity. The Perceptual Map At the point when I do showcasing plans, I like to organize my customers business, just as the top contenders on a perceptual guide. The guide works like diagram, with a Y and X hub. You pick two characteristics, for example, cost and highlights and put them at far edges, with the end goal that youre utilizing high and low cost, just as numerous and fewfeatures. Presently you need to situate where you are comparative with rivals in your space along these traits. For example, if youre individual brand has extraordinary relational abilities yet poor expository aptitudes, youre rivalry may have either the opposite, neither or both incredible aptitudes. I blogged about this last December if youre keen on finding out additional. Shutting Statement: By marking yourself you make the opposition superfluous!

MEMS Vibrational Micro Power Generation

MEMS Vibrational Micro Power Generation MEMS Vibrational Micro Power Generation MEMS Vibrational Micro Power Generation New gadgets are adjusting to the vibrations in their surroundings to produce vitality. Numerous sensors and remote innovations have low force needs so miniaturized scale watts of intensity or less are presently adequate for estimating and transmitting modest quantities of information to a beneficiary or dashboard close by. Vibrational vitality gathering (VEH) with miniaturized scale electromechanical frameworks (MEMS) is helping power what many think about a definitive objective: remote, sans battery, self-governing detecting, checking, and revealing. Driving remote sensors and systems with VEH power sources is being considered for use and is being field tried in numerous applications in which other surrounding vitality sources like sunlight based or warm are not accessible: businesses, for example, basic observing, streets spans, mechanical procedure control, apparatuses, ecological, human force, aviation, machine checking, home computerization, or car. A wide range of MEMS VEH gadget structures and procedures have shown that adequate force can be gathered to remotely bar information or charge a battery utilizing chiefly electrostatic or piezoelectric (and less regularly electromagnetic) strategies. Commonly a moving mass/spring get together is tuned to work and return the most force at explicit frequencies. MEMS gadgets and advances have assembled and changed surrounding mechanical vibrations to electrical vitality when vibrations happen inside a limited scope of frequencies. Yet, most certifiable gadgets start and stop, run at different speeds, and have changing vibration profiles. Vibrational Challenges The test of vibrational vitality gatherers has been to locate the correct gadget tuned for the particular recurrence, and getting enough force out of those frequencies for a considerable length of time, says Steve Grady from Cymbet Corporation, power the board supplier for sensors incorporated with MEMS VEH and other vitality reaping innovations. The sacred goal of vibration gathering would be a broadband or expansive recurrence gadget whose force collecting capacity doesnt tumble off rapidly around a full recurrence to keep on catching force as vibration conditions change, Grady says. Utilizing varieties of collectors each tuned to a somewhat extraordinary recurrence is expensive. Imaginative Solutions MEMS VEH structures, along these lines, are improving. In an ongoing report, Dibin Zhu and others from the University of Southampton, UK, summed up and talked about procedures freely accessible in writing for expanding vibrational recurrence scopes of miniaturized scale extend VEH that utilization mass spring frameworks. They are to: occasionally tune the framework with mechanical or electrical strategies, devouring force irregularly or constantly extend the data transmission by utilizing a generator exhibit, a mechanical plug, nonlinear (e.g., attractive) springs, or bi-stable structures. Analysts at the CEA-Laboratory for Electronics Information Technology, Grenoble, France, embraced piezoelectric tuning with a functioning controlled criticism circle into their electrostatic VEH and announced that the gadget consequently tunes the framework to build their data transmission by a scope of up to 30% of the full recurrence, at the expense of under 5 smaller scale watts. They likewise executed nonlinear springs thatimproved the vibration plentifulness just as recurrence go. MicroGen Systems, Inc., Ithaca, NY additionally plans to actualize tuning and other licensed methodologies to build recurrence transfer speed into future variants of their piezoelectric MEMS V vitality reapers, as indicated by Robert Andosca, the companys originator, president, and CTO. The building tests they at present offer are intended for explicit frequencies (give or take 2 Hz) and increasing speed levels of vibrations the gadget will understanding. As the main business organization on the planet delivering MEMS VEH, as indicated by Andosca, MicroGen Systems is hoping to discharge and sell second fire up show units in summer of 2011 and high transfer speed items in 2012. With these enhancements, MEMS VEH items are getting increasingly suitable for business use. Debbie Sniderman is an expert, a designer, and a contributing author to Mechanical Engineering. The test of vibrational vitality collectors has been to locate the correct gadget tuned for the particular recurrence, and getting enough force out of those frequencies for long enough.Steve Grady, Cymbet Corporation

When a Permit is Needed

When a Permit is Needed Confined Spaces: When a Permit is Needed A confined space can pose a serious threat in the workplace if an employee becomes trapped or exposed to toxins. Under certain conditions the  Occupational Safety and Health Administration  (OSHA) requires the employer to implement a permit program to ensure only properly trained personnel enter a confined space. OSHA Defines a Confined Space According to OSHA, a  confined space  meets the following three conditions: large enough and properly configured for employee entry and to accomplish work, limited entry and/or exit means, an area not designed for continuous occupancy. OSHA bases its definition on 29 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 1910.146(b). Some examples of this include: manholes, pipelines, pits, silos, storage bins, tanks, underground vaults. Permit vs. Non-permit Required OSHA also specifies the difference between a confined space that requires a permit and one that does not. To qualify as a space requiring a permit, it must fit only one of the following criteria: an existing or potentially hazardous atmosphere, contains material with potential for engulfing a person, has actual or potentially inwardly converging walls capable of trapping or asphyxiating a person, may or does contain any serious physical hazards, has an actual or potential recognized safety or health hazard. A confined space that doesnt require a permit for entry doesnt contain or have the potential to contain any hazard that could cause serious physical injury or death. Developing a Confined Space Program You need a permit program if your business has a confined space that fits the description of one needing a permit for entry. You must post signs outside the confined space entry warning of the danger to entry in that area that read: DANGERPERMIT-REQUIRED CONFINED SPACE, DO NOT ENTER. You and your employees could benefit from an OSHA Outreach General Industry Training Program that helps you learn more about confined space safety and proper precautions. It helps you learn about and meet the specific requirements of a permit program for confined space areas, as well as related topics. At a minimum, your companys written program must: analyze all workspaces to determine confined spaces before allowing entry, evaluate each space and its hazards, develop a way to prevent unauthorized entry, develop and use a way to eliminate or control hazards to ensure safe entry, set entry conditions, isolate the space, provide a method of safely eliminating or controlling atmospheric hazards, require, provide and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) and other necessary safety equipment, conduct atmospheric testing before entry monitor atmospheric conditions during entry, station at least one attendant outside while in use, institute emergency procedures for attendants who monitor multiple spaces for when an event occurs in one, coordinate with hired contractors, establish rescue procedures, establish a written system for entry permits, annually review and revise the permit system. In addition to the suggested general training, OSHA requires job specific safety training for confined space duties. It also requires updated training when an employee changes jobs or changes to the permit program occur. It requires rescue training. Besides rescue methods, this training must include basic medical treatments including first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). One member of the companys rescue team must obtain and retain a certification in both CPR and first aid. OSHA mandates specific program requirements for any permit system. A review of its web page on confined areas provides specific needs, but safety managers creating their first such permit program benefit from formal training in the topic. These programs provide templates for program development and practice opportunities for safety managers.

Resume Writing Computer Software

Resume Writing Computer SoftwareMany people wonder if they should use resume writing software or not. The truth is, you can do a resume format on your own. You just need to write in a professional manner and keep it organized. By following these steps, you will be able to create a resume that is the best it can be.First, start by creating your resume. Don't just write whatever comes to mind, rather, take your time and organize your thoughts. Your resume should be the starting point of your entire career. It's the place where you will get all of your contact information. A well written resume will give you an advantage over other candidates.Second, write a cover letter for your resume. After you have filled in the blanks in your resume, you need to know what to put in your cover letter. Your resume should tell your reader what you want them to know about you. If your cover letter doesn't grab their attention, it will be difficult to get them to read your resume. Make sure your cover l etter is professional and is clear and concise.Third, send your resume to a number of different employers. You don't have to send your resume to every employer that you are interested in, but you should at least make a few attempts. By sending out a few resumes, you increase your chances of getting a call back from each employer. It is highly unlikely that one employer will call you back, but it is possible.Fourth, after you get some contact information, post your resume online. Most job boards have forums that allow you to place your resume in front of thousands of potential employers. This means that you will have access to people who are looking for jobs in your field. When you post your resume online, it is much easier to get back to potential employers.Fifth, keep your resume as current as possible. As the old saying goes, you never know when the next position opening will arise. If you need to update your resume, do so as soon as possible.Sixth, make sure your resume is curren t. One of the ways that employers can find out if you have updated your resume is by reading it. If you have outdated information, chances are that they won't be able to find you. If you want to make sure that your resume is up to date, take some time and check it every so often. Not checking your resume will leave you open to the possibility of being overlooked. Finally, if you follow these steps, you will have a well-organized resume. These are just a few things that you can do to prepare for the job search. You can even make your resume easier to read by using resume writing software.

How to Improve Employee Retention for a High-Turnover Position

Step by step instructions to Improve Employee Retention for a High-Turnover Position There's nothing more fulfilling than filling an unfilled job at your organization. First of all, it implies the remainder of your group won't be extended slim improving resolve. Another worker additionally implies new vitality and thoughts animating the group. Recruiting makes probability. In any case, when you need to continually top off a similar job, it tends to be a bad dream. Each association needs to stay away from high turnover. Be that as it may, when it's kept to a specific job, it's particularly baffling. Employing experts must figure out what's going on with their position or procedure to discover an up-and-comer who will stay for the since a long time ago run. The issue isn't generally self-evident, so we requested that few recruiting specialists disclose what changes to make when worker maintenance is hard for a particular activity. This is what they needed to state: 1. Lead post employment surveys and really utilize the information. We have post employment surveys with all the individuals who left the activity consistently to comprehend and dive further into the issues and torment focuses. The post employment surveys assist us with understanding why they are not staying with the job and what, as they would like to think, could improve the job and the set of working responsibilities. The bits of knowledge we gain from post employment surveys have been gigantically utilized to improve our worker degree of consistency for a similar job. We make it a point to incorporate everything the activity involves part of the expected set of responsibilities. This incorporates the instability, non-points of interest of jobs, and duties. That has expanded our representative degree of consistency by a gigantic edge. During the total meeting process, we ensure the individual comprehends the sort of job we are employing for and ask them 'are you despite everything intrigued?' Ketan Kapoor, CEO and Co-Founder of Mettl Its absolutely impossible to know why workers continue leaving a job except if you lead leave studies. #employeeretention. Snap To Tweet 2. Be straightforward at each level. You can't take care of an issue until you realize why it's occurring. The initial step is to investigate your enrolling, employing procedure, preparing, and maintenance technique. Next, you should convey your requirements to your selection representatives every now and again. As a chief, I have to give our spotters however much input as could reasonably be expected so they can make any vital changes. It's additionally essential to be straightforward about what the activity involves. During the meeting, we give the competitor a rundown of a run of the mill day. We don't spruce up the activity as something it's most certainly not. For a help position, we don't shroud the reality they will be on the telephone with clients and that it can get exceptionally occupied now and again. Notwithstanding, we additionally make a point to share the positives of the activity and the things that keep us returning to work each day. Alisha Santoorjian Thunstrom, Director of Support Services at TempWorks 3. Comprehend the requirements of applicants. We encountered an unexpected issue in comparison to regular when we had a high turnover rate for workers in our client support division. The majority of these staff individuals were likewise understudies and as their timetables changed every semester, there was trouble planning the planning of work. We would not like to continue losing representatives we prepared, so we permitted them to focus on less hours seven days while telecommuting. Regardless of whether it implied that we expected to recruit a couple of more individuals to complete everything, it in any event implied having a reliable group. Nate Masterson, HR chief at Maple Holistics On the off chance that representatives continue leaving a place of employment, consider reclassifying the job so it addresses workers' issues. #recruiting Snap To Tweet 4. Rethink social fit. As an employing proficient, you must look past the job depiction. You should look further than capabilities and plan a procedure that likewise screens for social fit. For instance, I had a not-for-profit customer who was continually enlisting for representatives to give nonstop mind to their customers. We werent sure why individuals were leaving their association, so we directed a center gathering with top entertainers and posed heaps of inquiries about the workplace and what they delighted in. With this information, we had the option to overhaul their selecting procedure to concentrate less on ability and more on hierarchical fit. We searched for pieces of information in open-finished inquiries like Why are you going after this position? what's more, What do you think about our main goal? This added to a decrease of turnover by 23 percent. Colleen Pfaller, Founder of A Slice of HR 5. Face your own notoriety. A customer connected with me with a need in their outside revealing group. This was an accomplished proficient job with explicit duties in outside monetary revealing for an enormous, global, traded on an open market organization. The job was open for 355 days.this time. Beforehand, the position came open about at regular intervals or so because of high turnover. In the 355 days it was open, the organization had looked into more than 150 applicants and the group had met more than 50 of those face to face. Two offers had been dismissed. There had been such a great amount of turnover in the group word got around in the market, particularly inside the system of likely applicants. At the point when we were approached to help, we took a shot at changing the condition a piece. In the first place, we authentically educated the HR and recruiting groups of their market notoriety. At that point, we suggested something somewhat unique. Rather than running employment promotions (basically telling the market that it was open once more), we concentrated on sourcing great up-and-comers. Likewise, we recovered authority over the account on why the job was open, depicting the great, the terrible, and the monstrous before the gossip plant did. John Light, Partner at EvolvingTalentGroup At the point when work has high #employeeturnover, you have to see how it influences your notoriety for being an organization. Snap To Tweet 6. Reevaluate the job's worth. Is this work despite everything needs doing? Representatives need to feel tested and fundamental. Maybe the activity was once necessary to the general activity of the business, but since of innovative headways, it is currently a shell of its previous self. Possibly an examination of undertakings and results is all together. Chris Chancey, Founder of Amplio Recruiting

What job adverts really mean by Amber Rolfe Let’s face it, job adverts aren’t always the easiest things to understand…Sometimes, an overreliance on using the same stock phrases is to blame. But if you dig a little deeper, you might be surprised at just how much exploiting these clichés could add to your CV.To help you make sense of what employers really mean, we’ve decoded some of the most (over)used job advert buzzwords:Self-starterEmployers looking for ‘self-starters’ want someone who can take initiative and work under their own supervision. If you can see what needs doing on your own â€" and get on and do it with little guidance, then you probably tick the ‘self-starter’ box. This skill is particularly common for freelance or remote work, where direct supervision is limited. Busier workplaces and start-ups will also see this as a top skill. How can I demonstrate this skill? Reference any task or activity where you worked alone, or received little guidance, and achieved a good result. Wh ether it’s from using your own resourcefulness to complete a task to a high standard, or solving a problem without having to ask for help, you’ve probably been a ‘self-starter’ more than you realise.  DynamicEmployers use the term dynamic to describe confident individuals who are motivated by their work and capable of taking on new tasks. This means they’re looking for someone who can think intelligently, and use their enthusiasm to come up with inventive solutions to problems. If you’re innovative and creative with a knack for ideas, there’s a good chance you’re the kind of dynamic candidate the employer is looking for.How can I demonstrate I have this skill? Think about a time you’ve come up with new ideas or took on a new task with enthusiasm, and use them in your CV and/or cover letter. Backing up your problem solving skills with a relevant example will also impress the employer.  Forward-thinkingHere, the employer is looking for someone who has a positive, ambit ious approach to their work and can see the bigger picture in terms of how their contribution matters.Focussing on the results as well as the actions it takes to get there is also a big part of being ‘forward-thinking’ â€" and a candidate who can always look towards the future, regardless of any road blocks they face along the way, is exactly what the employer wants. How can I demonstrate I have this skill? To show you’re a good fit, reference a time where you faced a problem, but still pulled through and completed the project â€" all because you could see how your hard work would pay off in the long run.  Good track recordThis phrase is asking candidates to demonstrate their suitability for a role by giving examples of times they’ve exemplified each requirement. After all, anyone can say they’re good at something, but impressing the employer is all about showing your skills rather than simply stating you have them. And whether it’s through drawing the employer’s attentio n to a particular job, task, or academic achievement, tailoring your application to the role is the best way to make your application stand out.How can I demonstrate this skill? Read the job description thoroughly, and make sure your CV and/or cover letter shows genuine evidence of the skills and experience the employer is looking for. Once you’re clear on what they want, you’ll be able to tailor your application to fit within their requirements.  Detail/goal-orientedIn other words, the employer wants their applicants to be especially focused on one of two things â€" details or results. The best applications will then foreground these skills accordingly. For example, detail-oriented applicants will be able to show a meticulous work ethic, a strong attention to detail, and a good level of accuracy in everything they do.And, employers looking for goal/results-oriented candidates will want someone who’s driven, motivated, and focussed on working hard to achieve an end goal. How can I demonstrate this skill? Use your CV and cover letter to explain your focus on the little details and/or goals, and provide examples to back up the skills you’ve gained. For example, a ‘detail-oriented’ person could discuss a project, task, or activity where they needed to use an excellent level of precision and accuracy, and ‘goal-oriented’ people will focus more on reporting the numbers.Competitive salaryEmployers that state the salary for a job is ‘competitive’ could indicate a few things â€" one of which being that the salary may depend on your current skills and experience.A similar situation is to be expected if the salary is described as ‘negotiable’, also meaning leverage will make a difference when it comes to agreeing on pay.It may mean bringing the salary up as part the interview process yourself â€" so don’t be afraid to get down to the numbers as part of your questions. How to ask about salary: It’s generally always best to ask about salary as ear ly as you can. This might be possible during the application stage (if the employer asks you to provide your salary expectations), but if not â€" it’s perfectly acceptable to ask at interview stage. As long as you approach any money talk with caution, and you make sure your expectations are realistic, you should be able to get a clear idea of what the employer is willing to pay.  Still searching for your perfect role? You have tested and tried everything you can in your day job. You have put yourself out there, learned as much as you can and are now ready to do it yourself. Youve become one of the top people in your company and there really is nowhere else to go. Ive been there too and it was one of the most motivating factors for me to become my own boss. I didnt see myself growing in the company any longer and felt like I had done all that I could and gotten all the experience I could including my MBA. So, it was time to break free and use everything I have learned to do it myself. I am grateful for my eight years of experience and my MBA. It taught me a lot. 2. You have identified the problem your potential customers have and you think (or know) they will pay you for solving it. Dont just start a business because you think you have a good idea.  Starting your own business is really about helping people. If you want to help people, you need a problem that you can solve with your business! And you need to have done your market research so you know what your ideal customers are looking and how your business plan helps solve their problems. [RELATED: 5 Steps to Create a Business Plan] 3. You have leadership experience and you want to be in charge. This is something I really wanted. I wanted to be in charge and have people under me. I wanted to practice the leadership that I had learned so much in my MBA. I wanted to delegate and replace myself to grow a company. Today, I want to be a CEO and scale my business to be something even bigger than me. You have to have a vision as an entrepreneur so you can lead your company to your goal. 4. You want the challenge. Starting a business is such a great self-development tool. It is such a challenge. Its exciting. Its tough. You will never be the same person. You grow daily and learn daily. You have to become the CEO that needs to run your company 12 months from now. Which means you need to do personal growth work to become that CEO right this very second. 5. You are willing to put in the hours. Its a lot of work. You put in a lot of hours but hopefully you are really excited and passionate about it so it doesnt really feel like work. For me, my work doesnt really feel like work because I love what I do and I am definitely willing to put in the hours. Build Your Brand By Building Your Team - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Build Your Brand By Building Your Team - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career How to create your own personal brand dream team and accelerate your professional growth. Whether you’re a business professional or a business owner, having a solid team is imperative to building a strong brand. If there is one thing I would go back and tell my younger self, it is that constructing  a solid team accelerates professional growth. Rugged individualism is not efficient in business. If you are growing a business or want to move up the corporate ladder, consider the following types of team members: Unpaid mentors Mentors are those people who have typically already walked the path that you are now starting. They are able to provide insight and advice that can save time, money and frustration. The most important factor to consider when selecting a mentor is the person’s track record in your field. All business relationships should be mutually beneficial. Unpaid mentors are usually “compensated” through the positive experience of watching a mentee put their counsel to use to gain results, and then repeat the cycle with his/her own mentee. Mastermind group Mastermind groups have been around since the beginning of time. These are groups of individuals who meet on a regular basis to provide support and insight to fellow members. In an effective group, each member has an opportunity to seek and offer aid to fellow members. You may join or start a group in your industry, or made up of individuals from varying industries, allowing for the greatest variety of resources and information for the group. Trade members Trade members are those professionals or business owners who you have an agreement to trade goods/services for similarly priced goods/services. For instance, if you are an attorney opening a new practice, you may partner with a graphic designer for your marketing needs. In return for his/her services, you may offer your own legal services. If you own a popular blog, you may have writers as trade partners. Paid members Paid team members include your employees, contractors, coaches, and anyone else you pay to create/strengthen your professional brand. This could include a publicist, resume writer, or even stylist. Each type of team member has its own benefits and drawbacks. An unpaid mentor can shave years off of a professional’s learning curve, but may be difficult to schedule time with since meetings may not be a top priority for the mentor. Mastermind groups can provide excellent feedback, but the quality of one’s experience will rest squarely on the quality and commitment of each group member. Trade members are helpful when finances for services are limited, but can be stressful when each party does not fully commit to adding the same value. Lastly, paid members are typically the easiest to work with due to the nature of the agreement, however, this group is also typically the most expensive. Do you have a team in place to help you build your brand? If so, which of the above team members do you use?

A Corporate View of Personal Branding with Pros and Cons - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

A Corporate View of Personal Branding with Pros and Cons - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career There are two perspectives on personal branding and today I want to highlight the corporate view. The non-bias way to do that is to let someone else introduce it and Rand Fishkin is the chosen one. Rand is the CEO Founder of SEOmoz.org and is a well-known SEO speaker and expert. He recently released a podcast with his 50-foot view of personal branding, relative to corporate branding and shares some interesting insights that many of you might not be aware of or overlook. Enjoy the below podcast! [vimeo 964386] Company vs individual differences in marketplace impact Company: The company influences an audience who speaks to the marketplace and in turn purchases from the company. Individual: The individual influences an audience, who speaks to the marketplace. The marketplace goes back to the individual and asks for a product or company endorsement. Personal branding pros vs cons Pros Easy to identify More trustworthy Able to transition Transitive branding Cons Might leave Not scalable Vulnerable to negative association Before you create a personal brand. Goals of building a personal brand: attention Investment costs and clear strategy Resources Analysis There are many more pros to personal branding, but from the organizational level, they want to build corporate spokespeople that understand the corporate messaging, so they can attract others to the company. As you develop your brand and become more visible, other companies will want to hire you, which is a threat for a company that doesnt have a strong employer brand. I think personal brands are scalable with evangelists, but not with person-to-person contact. I think companies can be just as trustworthy as people, depending on the reputation theyve built up over time in the publics eye. I disagree that a personal brand is easy to identify because it takes some people 20 years to discover it. After 16 jobs, they finally realize they want to be a Doctor, instead of a cubicle warrior, etc. A company brand is equal to the personal brands attached to it, therefore I believe they are both equally hard to identify. Personal brands are not shielded from bad publicity through a corporate entity, and any employee will take the heat of a company anyways. Attention is not the only goal of personal branding and of course you need resources to be able to generate enough awareness over a period of time. Rand doesnt take into account that everyone has a personal brand and that its not up to companies as much anymore, which ones are displayed to the public.   Social media has become an outlet that even a janitor in a company can use to express their opinions.   No disclaimer on a blog is going to stop the association you have with your company either.   Otherwise, I think Rands perspective is noteworthy and that you can learn a lot from that podcast if youre looking to represent your company in the media.

The Pros and Cons of Taking a Federal Job CareerMetis.com

The Pros and Cons of Taking a Federal Job â€" CareerMetis.com Do you want to work for the government? Not many people get the chance to answer that question, so you are lucky. Still, you should never accept the opportunity without weighing up the positives and negatives. That would be irresponsible, to say the least as you could end up in a job you hate.evalBefore you give them your answer, take a look at the pros and cons below. They should help you decide whether a federal job is a good idea or a bad idea.Pro: Good Work To Life BalanceBecause you would work for the government, they have to promote family-friendly work policies. After all, who would if they didn’t? The great thing about working for them is that you will have a lot of flexibility within your job. Most federal jobs use a flexi-time program that allows you to work outside of the set hours. For instance, you wouldn’t have to work nine to five as you could do ten to six. As long as you work your allotted hours, you are fine. For people with children, that is a massive bonus.Pictu re Credit Con: Pay is RelativeThe worst thing about working for the government is that the pay is a lot less than with a private company. Private companies pay their employees more as they have more scope with regard to wages. The government is different as it has bands that it pays for certain jobs.As studies show, you could theoretically earn three times as much in the private sector. Obviously, you have to weigh the money against the extra work and responsibility. You might be more suited to the private sector if it seems like a good deal.Pro: BenefitsThere is a host of benefits that you will gain if you take a federal job. The reason they are so extensive is two-fold. For starters, they have to look after their employees just in the same way as a work/life balance. And, they need to compete against the private sector and the inferior pay. Please note that the government has to compete against the private sector like any other business. To do that, they provide you with basic life insurance. They also have great retirement schemes and health care. Your entire benefits package will cover everything, and that is a big enticement.Picture CreditCon: Lack of OpportunityevalLots of people see government jobs as having a glass ceiling. That is to say that there is only so far you can go and no higher. The issue is that the tops jobs rarely come available because they are so cushy. The problem is that the chances of promotion are quite limited. If you want to rise through the ranks, you might not be able to in a federal capacity. In the private sector, you can rise as high as you want as long as you get the results. The lack of opportunity for promotion is worth considering beforehand. Now that you know the pros and cons, would you like to work in a federal capacity?
